Are you thinking about starting a consulting business?

How long have you considered it?

What’s stopping you?

Consulting can be unpredictable. But if fear is stopping you from moving forward and preventing you from following your passion, you may be giving up the biggest reward of your life.

Sure, there is fear in change: fear of the unknown; fear of failing; fear of being judged. But let’s be reasonable. How often have you failed in your lifetime? If you are considering becoming a consultant, you’ve likely had very few failures. Maybe there were a few tests in school that you bombed or the job you applied for and didn’t get. Those were failures. And if you can remember others, it is only because there were so few and we always remember our failures more vividly than our successes.

Ask yourself, “Is fear of failure holding you hostage?”

Elaine nearly drowned when she was a kid and she still has a fear of water. On the other hand, she also loves swimming. To overcome the fear that could prevent her from swimming, she dives into the deep end of the pool first. Getting that nasty feeling of fear out of the way allows her to enjoy swimming. Halelly has a fear of heights but pushes herself to climb up cliffs on her hiking trips. Sometimes she gets frozen in place by debilitating fear, but eventually she climbs back down, and gets paralyzed less and less frequently.

We are not saying you should dive in to consulting without a plan or jump off of cliffs without a safety net, but we want to share ideas and actions you can take that will move you forward

Try reframing your fear. Tell yourself that you are doing what’s right for you, that it is exciting and forward leaning. You will be more successful by moving than stagnating and finding something you can do every day to move closer to your dream.

Here’s another question for you,” What’s the worst thing that can happen?”

  • You might not find business?
  • You don’t know how to charge for your services?
  • You don’t know how to get started?
  • You won’t have a regular paycheck?

One of the ways to move forward toward your dream of building your successful training consulting business is to find guides or mentors to help you avoid mistakes and answer questions like these. They can provide you with step by step guidance for what you need to do. Developing a sound business plan can help you create a path to follow with confidence. Mentors and coaches often answer questions and help you shake off the fear and get moving. Dale Carnegie said, “Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.” Instead of spending time worrying about what might happen, spend that same time taking action—because, it just might not happen!

If fear is holding you back from taking the plunge into something that might be fabulous, name the worst thing that could happen to you. Perhaps the worst thing is not trying . . . Perhaps you are comfortable where you are; but staying comfortable is not a way to grow. Mario Andretti, the race car driver said, “If everything seems under control, you’re not going fast enough!”

One of our colleagues once said that only 2% of all Americans have the discipline to achieve their dreams. Of the rest who do not achieve their dreams, 23% do not know what they want and another 67% know, but do not know how to make it happen. The remaining 10% know what and how but lack discipline to follow through. What separates the most successful people from the rest is that they take consistent action even when they’re faced with fear. In which category will you be?

We’re not suggesting that you dive into the deep end. But we do suggest you take action in spite of the presence of fear. You can wade in slowly with the help of trusted advisors.
